The Health Economics Group (HEG) at the University of East Anglia (UEA) is delighted to be hosting the Health Economists’ Study Group 2019 Summer meeting from the 3rd-5th July. Those interested in attending the meeting can now register through the website.

The HESG Summer meeting will take place on the UEA campus, which is set in 20 hectares of beautiful parkland with an interesting juxtaposition of brutalist and modern architecture. The meeting will make use of all that the campus offers to ensure it is not only a successful academic meeting but one that maximises the chance to network and socialise. The meeting sessions will take place in the Julian Study Centre (JSC), named after Julian of Norwich – believed to be the first woman to publish a book in the English language – which opened in 2014.

On the first evening, delegates will be treated to a BBQ, which will take place outside (weather permitting) in The Square with its sociable amphitheatre type stone seating and easy access to the bars and shops on campus. Delegate accommodation is provided in en-suite student accommodation on campus. The rooms all have access to a sizable shared kitchen which will afford you further opportunity to mix with others attending the meeting. The second evening will see us transported by city tour buses to our conference dinner in Norwich, enabling those who wish to stay on and experience the delights of Norwich nightlife to do so!

We are pleased to announce that the pre-dinner speaker will be the Rt. Hon. Norman Lamb MP. He will talk and take questions on social care funding, a topic of ongoing importance and that links in with one theme of research focused on within HEG.

Back on campus, we hope you also find time to enjoy the picturesque lake, known as the UEA broad, which makes for a pleasant stroll or run. Those wishing to have a harder workout can use the UEA sportspark facilities, which include an Olympic sized swimming pool, 125 station fitness centre, Myride®+ Indoor Cycle Studio, and more. Those looking for more cultured entertainment will be able to visit the Norman Foster-designed Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts and spot some famous sculptures around campus.

Participants can take part in a pre-conference short course on ‘Data visualization and econometrics’ taught by Professor Andrew Jones (Monday 7th January, 9:30am – 12:30pm). For more information please visit the conference website.

As part of the meeting, the University of York will host an event in tribute to Professor Alan Maynard, who sadly passed away in February 2018.
